Mowana House
Red – the ultimate cure for sadness!
Red – the ultimate cure for sadness!
Mowana is commonly known as the Baobab tree: the Mowana tree is known for its endurance and its shade often acts as a meeting place, or a place of shelter. Every part of the tree can be used and plays a role in medicinal and nutritional elements. Because of these traits, we aim for something similar within our house. We encourage collaboration and meeting to share ideas. Each individual plays a role in our house, and we are always invested in finding ways to incorporate the talents and values of each member of our house.
Our house stands as a community: we strive towards allowing each person to feel like an individual, and especially as an individual who is part of a larger group where they are always accepted and loved for.
The mascot is Elmo, a character from “Sesame Street”.
“Tutor group is my safe place. More specifically, it’s a place where I feel the support from the people around me, and where I find the most motivation to continue the day. Tutor group will always hold a special place in my heart, as it is where I’ve found the most stability and comfort in my high school career. I love my tutor, and nothing in the world can ever change that.”
– Hannah Daniels
“Tutor is a place where we can be whoever we want to be: we can stress about test we didn’t study for, laugh with one another, be with each other, play card games, quickly scribble down homework you didn’t finish, comfort those who are having a bad day, and even catch an extra ten minutes of sleep. But what I love most about it is that we can do all of this without being judged and with our sisters there to help and support us to do our best even when we feel like giving up.”
– Jessica Hansen
