Jannah Hoosain (Grade 10), is a member of the South African Junior Debating Team – Team Jacob. Jannah and her team did remarkably well at the recent Tanzania National World Schools Debating Championship. The event was held from 10 -14 August. The teams who competed were from six African nations: Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana. The championship featured 50 teams with 180 debaters, showcasing exceptional debate skills.

Both South African squads – Team Jabo and Team Jacob delivered outstanding performances, securing victories in all their rounds. Team Jacob in particular stood out by participating in 5 Rounds, advancing through 3 additional Rounds to reach the finals.

In a gripping climax the South African squads found themselves pitted against each other after successfully navigating through Quarter and Semi Finals. The final debate revolved around the motion: ‘This House believes that prisoners should have access to cellphones.’

Jannah also distinguished herself individually, ranking joint 2nd among the 180 debaters who participated in the Championship.

Jannah’s victory stands as a testament to her dedication and prowess in the world of debating. The school community joins in celebrating her success and wishes her continued excellence in her pursuits.
