Jannah Hoosain (Grade 10), is a member of the South African Junior Debating Team – Team Jacob. Jannah and her team did remarkably well at the recent Tanzania National World Schools Debating Championship. The event was held from 10 -14 August. The teams who competed were from six African nations: Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana. The championship featured 50 teams with 180 debaters, showcasing exceptional debate skills.
Both South African squads – Team Jabo and Team Jacob delivered outstanding performances, securing victories in all their rounds. Team Jacob in particular stood out by participating in 5 Rounds, advancing through 3 additional Rounds to reach the finals.
In a gripping climax the South African squads found themselves pitted against each other after successfully navigating through Quarter and Semi Finals. The final debate revolved around the motion: ‘This House believes that prisoners should have access to cellphones.’
Jannah also distinguished herself individually, ranking joint 2nd among the 180 debaters who participated in the Championship.
