Pastoral
We create a genuine sense of community by fostering relationships across the grades within the House and Tutor Group systems, and the extra curricular programmes.
At Wynberg Girls’ High School we encourage involvement, pride and school spirit. Relationships are also fostered within the Grades through the Academic Curriculum and Extra Curricular activities.
We believe in gaining a broad foundation of knowledge about the wider world. We offer personalised attention. We listen. We debate. We push you to expand your horizons.
Grades
While the school is organised into House Tutor Groups to foster relationships across the school, and to enable staff to identify and understand problems and achievements quickly, most of the academic time is spent with the grade. A number of grade-specific issues arise, and there is a particular focus in each grade:
Belonging – getting to know your school and your peers
Establishing and recognising boundaries
Looking at Leadership
Leading the School
Preparing for Tertiary Education and the working world
Houses
Fun, Friendships and Keen Competition in Our Houses
Through our house and tutor group systems the spirit of our school can be found: the development of keen and imaginative competition in the form of house challenges; the developing of rich and enduring relationships over a number of years in their tutor groups and the building of a strong sense of identity and pride in their house – all in the interests of fun – are part of that spirit.
Our school is divided into 8 vibrant houses, each under a senior teacher (the House Coordinator) who is responsible for and takes a keen interest in approximately 120 learners. In addition to the class tutor, each tutor group is led by a Matric Leader whose personality and skills are particularly suited to the support and inspiration needed to create a sense of belonging, to instil pride and encourage school spirit.

Leadership Programme
We immerse our learners in experiences that prepare them for leadership in a challenging and changing world. There is in each grade a programme uniquely designed to prepare our young women for inspirational and courageous leadership. In the senior years of their schooling, it’s the real McCoy. A dynamic and rigorous learner leadership programme takes place.
Answerable to each other and to their school, they develop a six-week project tailored to their particular interests, concerns and talents. It is running with these project-based experiences in leadership that there is exponential growth. By the time our Grade 12 our student leaders are appointed, they have shown that they have the talents and the vision to assume responsibility of a portfolio.
Counselling Support
The WGHS Counselling Department is comprised of Masters level trained social workers who offer psychosocial care and intervention to support our learners. Appointments during school time can be made by emailing counselling@wynghs.co.za.
The WGHS Counselling Department is often involved in offering EQ workshops to both parents and students at regular intervals. Our goal is to assist WGHS in developing well-rounded, self-soothing and well-adjusted students.
The WGHS Counselling Department has access to a network of professionals in social and psychological services for learners, in consultation with their parents, to be referred to when needed for external care.
